About a month ago now, Karen got on board some lovely Korean Air planes and jetted off to Vietnam to visit Scott. We arrived on a weekend, so Scott showed us around. Here’s Karen on the back of his scooter – I had to get a motorbike taxi (xe om). Great fun.
It’s a really fun town, where life is lived on the street for everyone to share – people eat their meals, get their hair cut, sell their wares and even have their teeth examined on a tiny strip between buildings and the choking, chaotic but remarkably safe roads.
Lots of cool stuff to see of course. Here’s the flag tower at the Citadel, with some revolutionary poses. Just around the corner were the remains of crashed American jets from their last, big war.
Just walking the streets was a lot of fun. There are buildings left over from the nearly century-long French colonial rule, and a few ancient temples, too.
Here’s Scott’s friend Cindy who showed up the day after us. We did a lot of sight-seeing together, as well as our big hill tribe trek – more details of that later.
This being a Communist country still (in name at least), there were some great flags, posters and murals exhorting citizens to vote or show courtesy on the roads etc.
Karen fitted right in, of course.
More hands!
